Chen's hope of capturing his first ever Singapore Open title fizzled out as he sank to a 14-21, 18-21 defeat against the World No. 14 Angus Ng. In their previous encounter, Ng lost to Chen at the 2013 Badminton Asia Championships.
Chen was leading with 11-3, 14-7 before he squandered the next 10 consecutive points to lose the second set.
"I lost my focus when I was leading. Nevertheless, I'm satisfied with my performance here in Singapore," said Chen LongThat was the first time that Chen has made the last eight of the Singapore Open after two previous failed attempts. Chen had not able to win any championships in his last six tournaments after he won the Denmark Open last October.
Chen Long's compatriot, the No. 2 seed Lin Dan however manage to power to a 21-18, 21-14 victory over Indonesia's Tommy Sugiarto in front of a boisterous audience.
Lin will play another Indonesian Sony Dwi Kuncoro in the semi-finals after Kuncoro eliminated China's Wang Zhengming 24-22, 12-21, 21-16 in 67 minutes.
In women's competition, No. 1 seed Carolina Marin of Spain was also knocked out by Japan's Akane Yamaguchi in a marathon 3-set thriller, losing 13-21, 21-18, 21-18 in 71 minutes.
Yamaguchi stayed aggressively to prevent a remarkable late surge from Carolina Marin in the decider to win the match.
"I am not worried when I was trailing, I just try to play my best to win one point at a time," said Yamaguchi.
Yamaguchi will take on last week's Malaysia Open champion Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand on Saturday, after Intanon defeated compatriot Porntip Buranaprasertsuk 21-12, 21-18.
The 183cm Sun Yu who defeated No. 2 seed Nozomi Okuhara yesterday, was on course to defend her women's singles title after breezing past Sung Ji Hyun of South Korea 21-15, 19-21, 21-19. She will face He Bingjiao in the semi-finals, after He Bingjiao overcame former Singapore and current USA shuttler Zhang Beiwen 21-16, 21-15.
