"The stadium was a little colder than usual today, and the drift made me harder to control the shuttle. I tried to keep my rhythm and didn't give my opponent any easy chances," said Lin.

Sun used her height to her advantage to send Okuhara running around the court to defeat the Japanese 21-16, 21-11 in 46 minutes. Meanwhile, two-time Singapore Open champion Wang Yihan of China posted a sub-par performance on Thursday and was beaten by Thailand's Porntip Buranaprasertsuk 21-9, 22-24, 17-21 in 57 minutes.
