Lin Dan eases into Singapore Open quarters

Singapore: Two time Olympic champion Lin Dan of China was near flawless as he marched into the quarter-finals of the Singapore Open on Thursday with a straight-sets victory over Indonesia’s Christie Jonatan.
The 19-year-old Jonatan offered little resistance to Lin, went down to the Chinese badminton superstar 13-21 in the first set.
Lin looked untroubled when he concluded his straight-set victory by winning his second set 21-7. The No. 2 seed Lin Dan will take on No. 8 seed Indonesian Tommy Sugiarto on Friday.

"The stadium was a little colder than usual today, and the drift made me harder to control the shuttle. I tried to keep my rhythm and didn't give my opponent any easy chances," said Lin.

In the other men's singles second round match, current world No. 1 Chen Long of China was made to work when the fought back from a set down to edge past Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand 17-21, 21-18, 21-9 to earn his first quarter-final Singapore Open appearance. Chen faces Angus Ng Ka Long of Hong Kong in the quarter-finals.
In men's doubles, Malaysia's Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong were sent packing after they lost to the World No. 1 pair Lee Yong Dae/Yoo Yeon-Seong of South Korea 14-21, 13-21 in 39 minutes.
Lee/Yoo will play Angga Pratama/Ricky Karanda Suwardi of Indonesia for a semi-final berth.
In women's singles, standing at 183cm, the world No. 14 Sun Yu of China looked like a tower next to World No. 4 Nozomi Okuhara of Japan at the height of 155cm. Sun used her height to her advantage to send Okuhara running around the court to defeat the Japanese 21-16, 21-11 in 46 minutes.
Meanwhile, two-time Singapore Open champion Wang Yihan of China posted a sub-par performance on Thursday and was beaten by Thailand's Porntip Buranaprasertsuk 21-9, 22-24, 17-21 in 57 minutes.
Sun Yu will play No. 6 seed Sung Ji Hyun of Korea next while Porntip Buranaprasertsuk will meet compatriot and No. 3 seed Ratchanok Intanon on Friday.
